I am needing an implement to maintain a long gravel drive. The drive is nice and level but I just need to occasionally move the loose gravel back in the middle of the drive. An angle blade looks like the right tool for the job and I was wondering if longer is better. Say 8' instead of 6' so the blade will reach out farther than the wheels. Would a 6' blade that offsets accomplish the same thing? My tractor is about 5 1/2' wide at the rear tires.

Hi BobI have a rake with wheels that I use for just what you are talking about. The wheels help give you great level finish. If you are in need of moving a lot! of material then maybe the blade would be best. I am told that a box blade is best for fixing pot holes but I find the rake does a great job with the loose stone.Mario ....

bob- a box blade isn't going to bring back the stone into the center of the driveway very well. The only way a box blade will do that is to tilt it with the screw adjustment on the 3pt so that one end of the blade is up and then it sort of slides the stome out of that opening. Too much of a bother when you can get a angle blade which will do the job nicely. Also if you get one with optional sides to it, it will act like a box blade when you need it. Stick with a heavy angle blade. Bo ....

Hello Bob. Offset is not the same as a wide blade because offset tends to push the tractor to the side. It is not as effient as a long blade, which has the advantage of centering the torque in the center of the tractor. If the tractor is light weight, an offset drives the tractor instead of the proper way around. That said, most 30 hp tractors struggle to pull enough material in an 8 foot blade to make it worth the effort. You can only pull an inch or so of constant depth in dirt with a small tractor pulling an 8' blade and it is hard to keep it spreading smoothly. But you know...your gravel drive might be the exception. If it is loose gravel then a light weight 8 foot blade might work. It would be worth a try. You might want to consider a light weight inexpensive 8' blade - because it is the reach you are after rather than the big job capability. Whatever you do, get a set of end plates for an angle blade. I use mine all the time for spreading dirt. If you put a little tilt to the blade, then the end cap makes it possible to spill the dirt under the blade instead of off the end. ....
